Summary:
The Behavioral Health Safety Technician reports directly to the clinical coordinator or charge nurse and is responsible for assisting in the development and maintenance of a safe environment for patients, families, and staff during program hours. They will therapeutically intervene with patients experiencing emotional disturbance, utilizing evidence-based de-escalation and aggression management techniques. They will also assist with the specialized patient care needs of each individual patient using principles of child and adolescent development and knowledge of psychopathology.
Responsibilities:
Serve as the safety expert on the inpatient and acute stabilization units. This includes a strong knowledge of and adherence to established safety policies, procedures, and standards of care.
Develop supportive interpersonal relationships with individuals and groups of patients in accordance with treatment plan goals.
Function within the philosophy of the Behavioral Health Center.
Contribute to the development and implementation of individualized patient care plans and assists in the integration into comprehensive treatment plans.
Participate as a Treatment Team member in assessing the social and emotional needs of the patient.
Assist in physical restraint techniques necessary in an attempt to control violent, combative patients and maintain a safe environment with respect to age-specific competencies and guidelines in conformance with seclusion and restraint policies and positive approaches training.
Initiate debriefing sessions and provide feedback to staff after seclusion and restraint situations and any crisis.
Partner with Safety Specialists and Public Safety Officers in monitoring and maintaining a safe treatment environment for patients, families, and staff. Intervene during escalating situations applying skills and expertise to reduce the likelihood of physical altercations.
Assess for changes in patient behavior that may require a 1:1 interaction to provide early intervention.
Document patient encounters in medical record/progress note.

Technical Expertise
Skilled in communicating to diverse audiences during escalating and crisis situations.
Experience in applying evidence-based de-escalation and aggression management techniques.
Experience in project management methodology, including managing large and/or multiple projects and tools is required.
Basic knowledge of child and adolescent development and psychopathology.
Experience working with electronic medical record software, such as EPIC, is preferred.
Education and Experience
Education: Bachelor's degree required, preferably in Human Services, with two (2) years of relevant experience. In lieu of a bachelor's degree, a high school diploma or equivalent and six (6) years of relevant experience will be accepted.
Licensure: None
Certification: BLS certification through the American Heart Association is required
Years of relevant experience: minimum of two years of relevant experience working with child and adolescents in behavioral health settings preferred
