The Associate Director, Specialty Labs oversees the Clinical Immunogenetics Laboratory, the Pharmacokinetics Laboratory, and Lymphoma Genomics Laboratory and collaborates with investigators on developing new tests. Responsibilities include department operations and administration, coordination of individual laboratories and services, quality and regulatory oversight, financial management, and improvement projects, and with respect to the Lymphoma Genomics Laboratory responsibilities will include assay development, implementation and management of laboratory operations. All responsibilities require both individual accountability and collaboration with other groups and departments. Direct reports include managers of the Pharmacokinetics Laboratory and Clinical Immunogenetics Laboratory.

This position will be 1.0FTE/full-time, Monday-Friday.

Responsibilities

• The Associate Director, Specialty Labs oversees the Clinical Immunogenetics Laboratory, Pharmacokinetics Laboratory, and Lymphoma Genomics Laboratory. Responsibilities include department operations and administration, coordination of individual laboratories and services, quality and regulatory oversight, financial management, and improvement projects. All responsibilities require both individual accountability and collaboration with other groups and departments. Direct reports include managers of the Pharmacokinetics Laboratory and Clinical Immunogenetics Laboratory.
• With respect to the newly initiated Lymphoma Genomics Lab operations, the associate director will provide technical and operational oversight of genomic testing operation and clinical assays performance, assist in data preview and reporting, oversee quality control and proficiency testing, and monitor instrument performance and coordinate the maintenance.
• Oversee operations of the specialty laboratories, including the management of operational and strategic objectives and budgets. Facilitate operational decision making and efficient utilization of resources to provide timely and accurate testing services.
• Ensure effective communication between the laboratories and internal and external partners, including clinical coordination; provide laboratory representation to multiple forums across Fred Hutch, Seattle Children's Hospital and University of Washington partners, and clients of reference services.
• Provides leadership and support to move laboratory initiatives forward; ensure laboratory interests are well represented in collaborative projects. Support implementation of new technologies and instrumentation, including laboratory information management systems.
• Mentor managers and provide opportunities for leadership development. Ensure staff training, development, and orientation. Responsible for personnel issues, including hiring, performance management, continuing education and disciplinary actions.
• Work in collaboration with the Clinical Laboratory Medical and Scientific Directors, Lab Leadership, and QA Leadership to provide cross-departmental oversight and guidance for quality, safety and compliance with applicable standards, laws and regulatory mandates related to Specialty Laboratories.
• Partner with Clinical Labs Business Operations and Finance to manage business workflows, strengthen financial and expense oversight, and support department priorities.
• Support the development and maintenance of adaptable laboratory systems to meet evolving clinical and research needs. Collaborate on the strategic planning and implementation of infrastructure, workflows, and financial models that facilitate clinical and research activities within the laboratory. Assist Principal Investigators and research administration teams in aligning scientific goals with operational capabilities, fostering coordination and project success.

Qualifications

Required:

• Bachelor's degree in biological science, epidemiology, public health, business or equivalent
• Progressive clinical laboratory administrative and technical experience with 5+ years as a manager or above. Experience in clinical genomics testing, validation and analysis using cutting-edge sequencing platforms.
• Excellent operational skills, with a focus on operational improvement.
• Practical in-depth expertise in clinical genomics testing, including next generation sequencing, in CLIA clinical laboratory.
• Experience with process and equipment validations. Working knowledge of laboratory equipment management
• Strong financial skills, including proficiency in budgeting, forecasting, strategic fiscal planning, and the use of decision support systems, benchmarks, and metrics to guide operating decisions.
• Solid track record of effective management. Experience mentoring laboratory professionals, developing staff competency, and creating a highly accountable team.
• Proven experience working effectively with clinical leaders in a multi-disciplinary environment.
• Effective communication at all levels in an organization with strong verbal and written communication skills.
• Experience with CLIA regulations as they are represented in the CAP and ASHI standards for laboratory accreditation. Experience with Washington State Medical Test Site regulations and applicable Joint Commission standards

Preferred:

• Bachelor's degree in a chemical, biological, clinical or medical laboratory science, or medical technology from an accredited institution. Meets the CLIA education requirements for a high complexity general supervisor in Molecular Pathology.
• Master's degree or higher in biological science; A degree in business administration will be of added value.
• Minimum of four years of experience (including two years in high complexity testing, one of which in molecular pathology methods) under a qualified section director. Meets the CLIA training and experience requirements for a high complexity general supervisor in Molecular Pathology.
• Experience with clinical research and clinical trials administered in the patient care setting.
• Experience in a large, complex ambulatory cancer center.
• Experience working in a laboratory offering reference services to external clients.
• Familiarity with clinical research processes and their application in clinical laboratory settings

The annual base salary range for this position is from $142,251.20 to $237,057.60, and pay offered will be based on experience and qualifications.

This position will be 1.0FTE/full-time, Monday-Friday.

This position may be eligible for relocation assistance. Although Fred Hutch is not sponsoring most H-1B visas at this time, candidates who already hold an H-1B sponsored by another organization and are currently in the U.S. may be eligible for this position.
