The Cardiac Sonographer is responsible for the following:
Performs cardiac ultrasound examinations to define and document anatomy and physiology of the heart, identify or rule out congenital anomalies, and assess ventricular function in pre and post operative patients.
Assists in planning case methodology and conducts comprehensive examinations in non invasive lab as needed.
Analyzes test results and prepares preliminary diagnoses and findings for physicians’ review..
Establishes supportive relationship with patients and families.
Identifies patients’/families’ specific needs and incorporates into patient care as appropriate.
Explains examination procedures to patients/parents and notifies them of scheduling problems or changes.
Cleans, sterilizes and inspects transducers according to established procedures.
Cleans and maintains examination rooms and equipment.
Monitors and restocks supplies, reporting items to be reordered.
Identifies and reports equipment malfunctions.
May conduct informational sessions to outside observers (i.e., potential ultrasound students or clinical students early in their education program).
Assists in data collection for research studies.
Develops knowledge of current professional trends and practices as well as anatomy, physiology, surgical repair and related subjects through attendance at conferences, reading sessions and other continuing education programs.
The Cardiac Sonographer must have the following:
Completion of high school or equivalent education.
Completion of an accredited Cardiac Ultrasound program that includes one year of clinical experience in pediatric and/or adult echocardiography.
Registered Diagnostic Cardiac Sonography (RDCS) certification (adult or pediatric) from the American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonography (ARDMS).
New graduates must obtain certification within one year from the date of graduation.
A current Basic Life Support certification (BLS) in accordance with American Heart Association standards is required
