Job duti es are dependent on the laboratory and may be composed of a combination of the following duties and responsibilities related to the specializati on.Work PerformedPerform routine tests in clinical laboratories for use in the treatment and diagnosis of disease us ing standard techniques and equipment; perform related duties in laborat ory to include storing and labeling specimens and using manual and autom atic equipment to prepare specimensand perform analytical tests. Prepar e sterile media in plates, jars or test tubes for use in growing bacteri al cultures; incubate culture for specific times at prescribed temperatu res. Understand and comply with laboratory Quality Control and Quality A ssurance policies and procedures for instrumentation and testing. Prepar e solutions, reagents and stains, following standard laboratory formulas and procedures. Maintain detailed records of tests performed and report laboratory test results to appropriate personnel; recognize Quality Con trol shifts and trends and take appropriate action whenever necessary. C alibrate and perform routine maintenance on test equipment, clean and st erilize laboratory equipment, glassware and instruments, maintain laboratory supply of chemicals and glassware; perform routine maintenance on e quipment. Collect blood specimens from patients using venipuncture, or h eel or finger stick; carry out Point-of-Care Testing waived tests and ur inalysis without microscope. Utilize various hospital and laboratory inf ormation systems and software. Interact in a professional and courteous manner with doctors, nurses, and other personnel to provide technical gu idance and address concerns. Perform other related duties incidental to the work described herein.Knowledge, Skills and Abilities h3>Experience involving patient contact, customer service in a medica l setting, strong communication skills, both verbal and written. Basic k nowledge of medical terminology. Working knowledge of laboratory and hos pital computer systems is helpful. Basic knowledge of laboratory safety and infection control procedures and practices including standard precau tions and hazardous chemical handling. Ability to demonstrate required d exterity, knowledge, and ability to complete assigned laboratory tasks a nd skills, attention to detail and compliance with all appropriate regul atory and safety requirements. Ability to maintain effective working rel ationships with other employees.Level Characteristics< p>Act as the PIC (person in charge aka General Supervisor in the absence of the Supervisor/Manager/Tech III) after attaining 1 yr of high comple xity laboratory experience post scientific baccalaureate degree or2 year s high complexity experience post scientific associate degree. Provide d aily supervision and/or oversight of the laboratory operation and person nel performing testing and reporting test results. Provide direct superv ision of all high complexity testing. Monitor testing to ensure that acc eptable levels of analytic performance are maintained. Responsibilities delegated from the director or technical supervisor include: Assure reme dial action is taken and documented whenever tests systems deviate from established performance specifications. Ensure that patient testing resu lts are not reported until corrective action has been taken and the test system is functioning properly Minimum Qualifications Education AS, AD or BS Degree or previous classification as non-certified medical technologist. Experience Minimal educational or experience requirements may be modified on a case-by-case basis at the discretion of the CLIA (Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendment) director if minimal CLIA requirements are met by the employee for the tasks being performed.
