Details Posted: 14-Mar-23 Location: Fargo, North Dakota Salary: Open Categories: Allied Health Internal Number: 698934300 Electroencephalograph (EEG) Technicians operate EEG equipment as well as other recording devices for such studies as electromyography (EMG), nerve conduction studies (NCS) and evoked potentials (EP). Technicians perform EEG, NCS and EPs to record electrical activity of the brain, spinal cord, peripheral nerves and muscles. Basic Requirements: United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy. English Language Proficiency: Candidates must be proficient in spoken and written English to be appointed as authorized by 38 U.S.C. § 7403(f). Education and/or Experience Combination: There are no specific educational requirements for this occupation. Education may be substituted for experience only at the GS-4 and GS-5 levels. Certification: No certification or registration is required; however, it is desirable that employees at this level have BCLS (Basic Cardiac Life Support) and ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support) certifications. Grade Determination: MEDICAL INSTRUMENT TECHNICIAN (EEG), GS-0649-08 Experience: At least 1 year of experience comparable to the next lower grade level which demonstrates the knowledge, skills, abilities, and other characteristics related to the duties of the positions to be filled. This would be experience which provided knowledge of the more complex procedures, the pharmacology related to this occupation, and knowledge of related acute disorders and diseases and their effects on organs and methods of treatment. Demonstrated Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities. In addition to the experience or education above, the candidate must demonstrate the following KSAs: - Ability to interpret testing data to evaluate critical information for surgeons and other medical staff during testing procedures. - Knowledge of anatomy and physiology of the nervous system and the ability to understand the relationship of EEG and evoked potential testing in detecting states of disease and health. - Knowledge of behavior assessment during seizure attacks in order to insure adequacy of recordings during seizure discharges. - Knowledge of a variety of advanced EEG equipment and peripheral equipment such as equipment for brain mapping, video EEG telemetry systems with seizure detection computers, and spike analysis software. - Knowledge of anticonvulsant medications and their effects on the EEG as well as other frequently used pharmaceuticals. - Ability to adapt neurodiagnostic devices, parameters, and procedures to complex, unusual, and often critical situations. Preferred Experience: Basic Cardiac Life Support, Advanced Cardiac Life Support, 3 years of experience, American Board of Registration of EEG & EP Technician (ABRET) or the American Association of Electrodiagnostic Technicians (AAET). Eligible applications will be referred on a weekly basis until the position is filled. Duties include, but are not limited to: Performs as an independent NCS/EP Technician by performing NCS and EPs (visual, somatosensory) studies involving setting up recording equipment, placing electrodes and adjusting stimulus strength. Interfaces with representatives from the various contracted medical equipment companies and maintain familiarity with new recording techniques. Operates and monitors a variety of EEG machines and evoked potential equipment. Assists the physician in special invasive procedures such as cortical function mapping and intracarotid amytal tests. Assists in scheduling patients, preparing, filing and mailing reports. Assists in the maintenance inventory and supplies and initiates appropriate ordering to maintain adequate levels of supplies. Assesses cerebral activity and advise physicians to adjust treatment parameters appropriately, i.e., status epilepticus, electrocerebral silence, asymmetric slowing during carotid endarterectomies, subtle seizure activity on depth electrodes. Identifies changes in the patient's condition during the performance of procedures, closely monitoring the patient condition, brain activity and/or seizure activity. Independently completes the test/procedure ordered and complete verification and documentation in a timely manner, as well as maintain patient privacy. Sets up monitoring equipment for patients with specific neurological disorders. Prepares and operates computerized video monitoring equipment for prolonged periods of time to record patient's brain activity through the use of scalp electrodes. Reviews long-term video monitoring and generates computer clips of patient seizures or abnormal brain functioning for review by a Neurologist. Marks computer printout noting time of day and patient status (awake, standing, sitting, and sleeping). Cleans, adjusts, and performs routine maintenance and repair on EEG/EMG/EP and video monitoring equipment to ensure proper functioning.
