1. Knowledgeable of The Surgery Center at Midlands Orthopaedics and Neurosurgery mission statement, philosophy and objectives of the facility.
2. Knowledgeable of the Surgical Care Affiliates (SCA) Mission statement, core values of integrity, accountability, service excellence, teamwork and clinical quality.
3. Knowledgeable of and complies with the policies and procedures of the facility including but not limited to arriving at the surgery center when scheduled.
4. Knowledgeable of basic computer software to access email, Athena, HST and OSCAR.
5. Utilizes specialized physical therapy knowledge, rehabilitation process and discriminative judgement while giving direct or indirect patient care.
6. Knowledgeable of total joint arthroplasty and spine surgery post-operative care.
7. Provides education for patient and caregiver(s) regarding post-operative rehabilitation.
8. Provides appropriate monitoring of the patient according to policy and procedure and current APTA standards.
9. Sets priorities to facilitate the flow of therapy for patients efficiently.
10. Documents therapy care provided in Athena in a timely manner and puts a hard copy of the therapy note in the patientâ™s paper chart.
11. Knowledgeable of surgery center and clinic durable medical equipment (DME). Able to apply DME, instruct its proper use and complete DME paperwork. Able to enter issued DME into Athena. Able to assist nursing with DME fitting, issuing and completing paperwork as needed.
12. Knowledgeable of physical therapy equipment. Able to check proper function. Notifies Quality Director of equipment issues and/or needs.
13. Recognizes legal and policy limits of individual practice.
14. Recognizes the importance of teamwork, active listening and respectful communication.
15. Utilizes time effectively.
16. Respects patientâ™s right to privacy, dignity, and confidentiality.
17. Provides a safe, efficient, and supportive patient environment.
18. Attends staff meetings and in-service programs as able. If unable to attend a staff meeting reads minutes of the meeting and signs acknowledgement form. If unable to attend an in-service program coordinates with lead therapy provider appropriate time to receive instruction.
19. Collaborates with radiology technicians best practices for patient safety with supine and standing x-rays.
20. Collaborates with Quality Director and other therapy providers policies and procedures to maximize patient safety.
21. Complies with all administrative and medical policies and procedures.
22. Reports and completes appropriate variance reports for Risk Management of patient, visitor and employee events or occurrences.
23. Reports to PACU Manager repairs or maintenance of facility equipment and/or building. In the absence of the PACU Manager notifies the Director of Nursing.
24. Takes responsibility for organization and neatness of work area.
25. Knowledgeable of and complies with the Infection Control Plan.
26. Knowledgeable of and complies with OSHA guidelines.
27. Competent and responsive to emergency situations (i.e. cardiac arrest, malignant hyperthermia, drug reaction, internal or external disaster, etc).
28. Successfully completes required competencies and yearly education required of position.
29. Maintains BLS certification and continuing education requirements for South Carolina Physical Therapy License.
30. Interacts with all patients, families, visitors and fellow employees in a mature responsible manner to ensure a positive and professional surgery center environment.
31. Adheres to and participates in the Corporate Compliance and HIPAA Program.
32. Maintains a neat, professional appearance.
33. Responsible for any other duties as assigned.

SPECIFIC DUTIES OF THE PHYSICAL THERAPIST

1. Review HST surgery schedule daily and establish list of therapy patients. Prepare patient instruction handouts.
2. Introduce self to patient and caregiver(s) and explain therapy provider role in their post-operative care.
3. Perform assessment of patient for readiness for x-rays if ordered and therapy session(s).
4. Communicate with radiology technician regarding x-rays if ordered.
5. Provide instruction to patient and caregiver(s) physician specific rehabilitation protocol for Hip Resurfacing, Total Hip Arthroplasty Direct Anterior, Total Hip Arthroplasty Posterior, Uni and Total Knee Arthroplasty and Sacroiliac Joint Fusion.
6. Instruct use of hip kit as needed.
7. Instruct and ensure proper fit of crutches and/or walker.
8. Instruct and ensure proper and safe use of assistive device(s) for transfers and ambulation with proper weight bearing status on level surface and up and down steps to simulate patientâ™s home environment.
9. Use gait belt for safety when ambulating patients.
10. Issue DME as needed. Complete DME paperwork.
11. Answer patient and caregiver(s) questions regarding post-operative rehabilitation.
12. Complete therapy documentation.
13. Demonstrate proper Infection Control practices.
14. Provide emergency care according to physician and administrative policy as needed.
15. Communicate relevant patient information to PACU nurse, radiology technician, surgeon, or other medical staff as needed.
16. Provide for patient safety by assuring a safe environment and compliance with the Life Safety Code.

Graduate of an accredited physical therapy program. At least 7 years of clinical experience required including at least one year of acute care hospital based treatment of total joint patients. Current South Carolina State Licensure to practice. Current BLS certification.
