Position Summary

Performs specific technical duties of a radiation therapist and provide assistance for the proper functioning of the department.

This position requires the full understanding and active participation in fulfilling the mission of Saddleback Memorial Medical Center.  It is expected that the employee demonstrate behavior consistent with the core values.  The employee shall support Saddleback Memorial Medical Center’s strategic plan and the goals and direction of the performance improvement plan.  The employee will also be expected to support all organizational expectations including, but not limited to: Customer Service, Patient’s Rights, Confidentiality of Information, Environment of Care and MemorialCare initiatives.                     

Essential Functions and Responsibilities of the Job

• Consistently applies read-back policy to all verbal orders, adheres to Patient ID policy. Always checks the patient ID photo before delivering prescription dose. Always checks patient name and birth date before starting initial CT or Treatment. Checks to see that you have the correct patient in Aria before starting.
• Uses Computer systems effectively. Can effectively use Aria for communication and patient look up. Can accurately and effectively use Aria for all department functions.  Completes all treatments in Aria daily.  Checks revenue against treatment schedule to assure the collection of all revenues. For wards all computer related problems to a Systems Analyst or manager. Performs simple computer/printer maintenance.
• Possesses required technical knowledge of department equipment. Possess functional knowledge of all ancillary equipment; the Varian TrueBeam and VitalBeam accelerator, the CT Simulator, the Simulation workstation, Varisource/HDR, Aria Treatment Planning System.  Functional knowledge of block cutting, knows how to call appropriate repair vendor for equipment service. Knows how to administer portable oxygen.
• Properly and efficiently manages patient flow and exams in the department. Actively participates in weekly chart rounds. Completes all data accurately in the patient's treatment record. Ensures that the physician order is signed off prior to the beginning of any treatment. Ensures that the patient signs the consent for therapy before the beginning of any treatment. Verifies the accuracy of the patient order with the physician prior to beginning therapy. Uses markers on all films produced. Is able to prioritize treatments and simulations in a time frame which meets patient needs. Documents all adverse reactions or complications on the appropriate forms. Verifies with the nurse and physician that all appropriate patient records have been received prior to the beginning of therapy treatments.
