The Nuclear Medicine Technologist is responsible for technical work involving the application of radionuclides to various designated portions of the body to assist physicians in the detection, diagnosis and treatment of diseases and abnormalities. Work involves the proper positioning of patients, the maintenance and adjustment of nuclear equipment, and the maintenance of quality assurance data for a prescribed period.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Properly screens patients prior to administration of radionuclides (i.e., current medications, allergic history, etc.).
• Positions and instructs patients in preparation for the application of radionuclides using specialized equipment and procedures.
• Inserts IV's for injections.
• Operates equipment selecting proper technical factors and protocols on an individual patient basis and as prescribed by the attending physician and/or radiologist.
• Under the direction of the Radiation Safety Officer, prepares and administers the appropriate radionuclide for specialized procedures.
• Cleans and makes minor adjustments to equipment.
• Handles emergency situations.
• Reviews the PACS processing of nuclear medicine studies.
• Prepares and maintains records and files of procedures.
• Purges outdated files as appropriate.
• Troubleshoots equipment failure and calls for service when appropriate.
• Ensures equipment is functioning properly on a continuous basis.
• Maintains supply inventory and requests supplies as needed.
• Consults with referring physicians and radiologists as needed.
• May assist in providing training and technical direction to lower level technicians and nurses in nuclear procedures and processes.
• Establishes and maintains effective relations with medical and nursing staff to ensure adequate and timely service to patients.
• May be requested to assist in the development of techniques for procedures.
• May assist in the use of a variety of equipment and procedures not routinely employed.
• Participates in continuing education programs in Nuclear Medicine Technology.
• Serves as a member of the Radiation Safety Committee and attends meetings as requested.
• Manages inventory of radionuclides with appropriate documentation.
• Performs and documents quality assurance tasks for all equipment according to regulatory requirements and hospital policy.

Prior experience as a Nuclear Med Tech preferred. Registration with either the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) or the Nuclear Medicine Technology Certification Board (NMTCB) as a Nuclear Medicine Technologist.

Graduate of an accredited Nuclear Med Tech program preferred.
