As a Diagnostic Radiologic Technologist (Magnetic Resonance Imaging), you will provide radiological technologist services primarily in the area of Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI). Basic Requirements: United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy. Certification: All applicants must be certified in general radiologic technology by the American Registry of Radiologic Technology, Radiography (ARRT) (R). Advanced ARRT certification is required for assignments that include computed tomography (CT), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), [or Mammography (M) duties performed independently, as applicable. Advanced certification indicates that the incumbent can operate independently and has demonstrated specific clinical competency in the appropriate specialty and taken and passed the designated examination. In modalities that require advanced certification, to support their continued development, technologists who do not possess an advanced certification may be provided on the job training with oversight from a certified radiologic technologist. Education: Completion of a full-time training course of at least 24 months in duration (or the equivalent) in a post-high school diagnostic radiologic technology program, evidenced by a certificate or an associate degree, accredited by the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT) or from other accrediting agencies as recognized by the Department of Education (DOE). Grade Determinations: GS-9 Diagnostic Radiologic Technologist (Magnetic Resonance Imaging) a) Experience- At least one year of experience equivalent to the next lower grade level (GS-8) directly related to the position being filled that demonstrates the clinical competencies described at that level. b) Must demonstrate all of the following technical Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSAs) Ability to balance the needs of patients and staff while still performing complex scans and procedures. Knowledge of techniques for gathering relevant information from the medical record, significant others, and health care providers. Ability to assess factors that may contraindicate the procedure. Knowledge of basic first aid and basic life support practices related to radiography. Knowledge of physical assessment, aseptic techniques, intravenous methods and techniques and universal precaution. Knowledge of pre-procedural, procedural, and post-procedural care of patients. Utilizes skeletal, vascular, neurological, trans-sectional anatomy, physiology and cross-sectional anatomy to recognize scans/images which best illustrate lesions and/or abnormalities. Recognizes when additional scans/images or different scans/images or positions are needed. Utilizes techniques pertinent to general diagnostic/MRI to insure high resolution scans. Interprets radiology requests and patient chart information, and correlates information with patients' current physical status, relating information as indicated. Performs first-aid procedures for seizures, cardiac arrest, anaphylactic shock, and contrast reactions. Performs duties relative to radiology aseptic and/or sterile procedures, and decontamination procedures. Troubleshoots equipment. Practices MRI safety in order to protect patients, staff and self. Screens patients and staff before entering scan room. Utilize MRI emergency response actions including code blue, rapid response, code magenta, behavioral, and fire drill as needed. Works with MRI safety committee to make sure the facility adherers to VHA policy and Joint Commission guidelines for MRI safety. Properly identifies patients by adhering to medical center policies and archiving correct patient identifiers in the PAC System. Assures that general diagnostic/MRI patients are screened in advance for any contraindicating conditions. Explains exams to patients and verifies the patient understands what is to be done and any hazards involved. Continually review new developments in MRI and general imaging in order to provide physicians and patients with the best possible examination. Optimizes use of the MRI scanner and maintains flexibility to allow for emergency cases. Maintains a professional working relationship with radiology staff and staff from other services. Prepares contrast materials which are used in MRI and general diagnostic studies. Stays on alert to patient's condition and other disorders that increase risk. Determines if patient needs lab test.
