Clinical Lead RN - ED Adult Boarder Unit, Clinical Transport & COVID Testing Team - Duke University Hospital

Department Profiles:
The Emergency Department Adult Boarder Unit (EDABU) was developed to support the Emergency Department and Inpatient units that admit intermediate-level patients. The EDABU care team cares for 8-16 patients, Monday through Friday, that have been admitted and are awaiting an inpatient bed assignment.  The team responsibilities include; providing nursing care that is inclusive of acting on admission orders, transporting and monitoring of patients facilitating treatment as ordered/directed, and other duties as assigned.  Our team is active in delivering exemplary care for each patient to ensure an excellent patient experience every time.

The Clinical Transport Team (CTT) at Duke is an intra-hospital transport team of nurses who strive to deliver exceptional care to ensure an excellent patient experience.  Primary responsibilities include transporting and monitoring of patients to diagnostic or interventional tests when it is not feasible to perform procedures and tests at the bedside utilizing evidence-based mechanisms to reduce adverse events and maintain the level of care that the patient is receiving on the unit itself.

Job Summary:

The Clinical Lead RN is a role developed to work in coordination with the nursing to ensure the work is accomplished effectively. The Clinical Lead RN is the first line support for staff, physicians and other related providers on service- specific clinical issues. The Clinical Lead RN is generally a long-term role, requiring clinical and interpersonal skills. The Clinical Lead RN collaborates with the manager on clinical and non-clinical issues (employee relations, individual behaviors, physician relationships, etc.). The Clinical Lead RN is the support for the unit/department/service when the manager is unavailable. The Clinical Team Leader is responsible for supervising, directing, coaching and mentoring their assigned core group of staff. Rotating within each unit is required.

Work Hours & Shifts:
Full Time: 40 hours per week – Monday - Friday

Work Performed

·        Duties and responsibilities include all those required of the CN III as well as:

·        Plan and coordinate clinical requirements for staff and ensure that all CBO and CBE requirements for staff are current.

·        Plan and assist with coordination of unit staff schedules and submit for manager approval.

·        Coordinate clinical requirements with staff regarding equipment and supplies.

·        Consult with preceptors and orientees on a regular basis to provide support and determine how orientation should proceed on an individual basis.

·        Collaborate with the manager for issue resolutions and projects to improve work flow processes throughout the department utilizing a proactive approach.

·        Collaborate with different departments (pharmacy, radiology, lab, registration) to resolve issues and improve work flow processes throughout the department.

·        Collaborate with the nurse managers in the interview process for new applicants.

·        Mentor/coach staff to enhance their professional development.

·        Assesses the performance of assigned new hires and orientees including entry level nurses, nursing care assistants and health unit coordinators; provides on going feedback and coaching.

·        Understand and communicate potential clinical equipment or supply issues to appropriate team members (Materials, Biomed, Sterile Processing, etc). Mentor and monitor the preceptors for all new employees.

·        Provide clinical/education updates and skill check-offs to entire staff on a regular basis.

·        Provides immediate support and education on policy, procedures, equipment and supplies.

·        Responsible for learning, implementing and teaching new technology/procedures.

·        Demonstrates awareness of current problems and basic plan for all patients within assigned area.

·        Provides clinical consultation and guidance as needed to facilitate patient care.

·        Gives assistance and/or direction to staff to facilitate quality patient flow.

·        Assess staffing needs according to workload and staff competency; re-assigns and adjusts staffing based upon patient care needs.

·        Delegates responsibilities within the scope of practice and validated competencies in order to meet the workload demands of the shift.

·        Facilitates assignments that support learning for the orientee or nurse learner.

·        Promotes an atmosphere of open communication that facilitates staff input into decision-making, resolution of conflict, and collegiality among all health team members. Communicates in an effective, professional manner.

·        Facilitates staff performance audits related to attitude, team performance, The Joint Commission, DFS Standards and SCIP initiatives.

·        Reviews and comments on forwarded SRSs related to their team or shift.

·        Facilitates and encourages staff participation in departmental and hospital committee and council meetings.

·        Attends departmental and hospital committee meetings as assigned.

·        Coordinates, facilitates, participates and directs departmental projects with follow-through and appropriate follow-up.

·        Other projects and duties as directed by the department managers.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

·        Knowledge of scope of the registered nurse, licensed practical nurse and nursing care assistant. 

·        Knowledge of and appropriate application of the nursing process. 

·        Knowledge of professional theory, practice and procedure. 

·        Ability to assess nursing needs of acute and chronically ill patients and their families. 

·        Able to independently seek out resources and work collaboratively. 

·        Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships.

·        Competent in BLS and/or other specialized life support requirements designated by work area.

·        Able to use computer and learn new software programs. 

·        Able to navigate the entity to provide clinical care for patients. 

·        Able to withstand prolonged standing and walking. 

·        Able to remain focused and organized. 

·        Working knowledge of procedures and techniques involved in administering routine and special treatments to patients. 

·        Pre-employment Physical Capacity Testing Required.

Minimum Qualifications:

Education

·        Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing required.

Experience

·        Three years of experience in nursing practice. 

·        Prefers three years of experience in an Inpatient setting

·        Selected candidates must meet the Clinical Ladder requirements for CNIII within one year of appointment.
