Provides leadership in translational, basic, clinical and population research. The Director is responsible for supporting development and implementation of strategies aimed at promoting AdventHealth Research Institute, partnering with the health system enterprise including NSI and AdventHealth Medical Group. He or she leads by example and influence and has a portfolio of grant funded research. He or she is effective in using institutionally designated authorities to manage the program and advance its scientific objectives. He or she builds collaborations with stakeholders to identify new opportunities and goals; establishing a collaborative partnership with one or more academic institutions; promoting partnerships between Research Scientists and Clinicians; improving communication internally and externally; and enhancing the overall research profile connected to the NSI. He or she has experience and/or aptitude to collaborate with sub-specialty clinicians in outpatient and inpatient neurology programs including movement disorders, multiple sclerosis, neuromuscular disease, headache, epilepsy, sleep, cerebrovascular disease, psychiatry, neuro intensive care and neurosurgery. Ensures compliance with AdventHealth Research Institute Membership expectations and standard processes. Combines and integrates Research Review Forum (RRF), scientific review and protocol monitoring for performance, with necessary representation of AdventHealth Leadership. Will perform other departmental administrative and financial duties as assigned. QualificationsWhat You Will Need: LICENSURE, CERTIFICATION OR REGISTRATION REQUIRED: If MD, eligible for unrestricted State of Florida license as a medical doctor Active board certification in Neuroscience related field EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIRED: MD OR PhD OR MD/PhD Minimum of five (5) years leadership experience National Institutes of Health (NIH) or equivalent funding EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE PREFERRED: Minimum of seven (7) years leadership experience Experience in leading a specialty research enterprise Industry/Pharma funding Strong background in neuroscience and translational research Prior NIH or NIH equivalent grant funding, such as R01 or equivalent Experience identifying, developing and implementing partnerships between health systems / hospitals, and academic institutions SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES Navigates Human Resources processes to effectively manage work teams With VP and Directors, adjusts the organizational chart to the meet the immediate and long term needs of AdventHealth Research Institute; manages research staff members and teams assigned to the Director; and assists with the recruitment and hiring of faculty and staff members Assists with implementation as required KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS REQUIRED: Ability to conduct oneself professionally, maintaining confidence, confidentiality, integrity and objectivity Proven ability to bring external research funding resources, including federal and industry Self-motivated and detailed-orientated, with good organization, follow-up and analytical skills Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to communicate effectively with senior scientific leaders across the national stage and with all levels of staff – executive, management and staff – both written and verbally Experience in research administration leveraging federal, industry and/or foundation funding sources Ability to work and lead a team environment with flexibility and adaptability Access to brain health program support provided for clinical research including clinical coordinating teams connected to brain health (movement disorders, multiple sclerosis, neuromuscular, headache, epilepsy, sleep, cerebrovascular disease, psychiatry, neuropsychology, neurological intensive care and neurosurgery), awareness of sponsors’ clinical trial pipelines through business development teams, operational study intake and portfolio assessment, budgeting, contracting and institutional review boards. Access to research cores provided including advanced imaging and other equipment necessary for the conduct of investigative research. Scientific director will provide expertise necessary for research facilities capital and operational planning, and philanthropic fundraising. Scientific director to support the Chief Scientific Officer’s effort to establish and develop academic partnerships MD physician scientist assuming the role of scientific director would be expected to involve in sub-specialty neurology clinics of their interest. KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS PREFERRED: Strategic planning experience Knowledge of federally funded research, such as research funded by the National Institute for Neurological Disorder and Stroke (NINDS) Previous Core Resource utilization experience Ability to lead and mentor teams and foster collaboration Job Summary: PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND JOB RESPONSIBILITIES: Scope of Responsibility: The primary goal is to serve as the leader of Brain Health research, in concert with the Chief Scientific Officer (CSO) for AdventHealth, clinical and administrative leadership of the Neuroscience Institute (NSI), NSI physicians, researchers, and operational teams. Establishes a vision for the program, advancing scientific goals, managing a complex organization, supporting research quality and performance. In close synchrony with the Chief Scientific Office, develops and executes strategic plans for neuroscience research, including with AdventHealth Foundation in order to advance philanthropic funding connected to neuroscience research advancement. Lead external and internal scientific collaborations in neuroscience-oriented disease areas including neurodegeneration, neurogenetics, Parkinson’s, Alzheimer’s, epilepsy, neuropsychology, neurosurgery, neurologic orphan diseases, gene therapy, metabolomics, stem cell therapy and the role of the immune system in neurological disease. Works with the CSO to identify, develop and execute one or more strategic academic-oriented partnership(s), conveying faculty status to NSI researchers and physicians, and influencing decision making in concert with the academic partner’s research efforts. Seek attainment of research achievements and recognition. Engages in high quality scientific endeavors, contributing to novel and innovative biomedical findings and observations. Participates and engages with AdventHealth leadership councils and committees including research review forums. Supports clinical and research operational teams to help develop and maintain the Brain Health Institute, including relationships with sub-specialty clinics, outpatient movement disorder programs, multiple sclerosis, neuromuscular disease, headache, epilepsy, sleep, cerebrovascular disease, psychiatry, neuro intensive care and neurosurgery. Works closely with internal teams to support corporate and philanthropic funding, establish pilot funding programs, build and maintain research physical space, key operational projects and endowments (through AH Foundation). Conducts own research in the field of neuroscience and brain health. Supports other duties as assigned by the Chief Scientific Officer. Compliance/Regulatory Responsibility: Adhere to all policies of AdventHealth and the AdventHealth Research Institute in accordance with all organizational, local, state and federal regulations. Accountable for assuring compliance and providing evidence of performance with entities such as Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) and Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Serves on committees including but not limited to protocol review management system (PRMS). Operating & Capital Budget/Financial Responsibility: Works closely with scientific faculty to attain industry and federally funded awards. Works with CSO, VP, AdventHealth Research Institute Directors, and Scientific leadership to ensure all departments within scope of operations are within allocated budget. Prepares, executes, and monitors operating budgets to ensure appropriate staffing, professional development, pilot funding, space, supplies, equipment, etc., for maintaining and improving quality of service and performance standards are applicable within the scope of responsibility. Strategic Planning Responsibility: Develops relationships with external organizations to foster growth of research Develops education platforms including CME programming and collaborative efforts with leading clinical research institutes across the United States Works closely with clinical and research leadership in departments connected with AdventHealth Neuroscience Institute. Performance Improvement Responsibility: Tracks and reports on performance metrics against objectives; develops work plans; addresses barriers to support successful implementation. Maintains a high level of responsibility for completion of projects. Creates career development and drives scientific faculty to output high impact publications. Community Relations Responsibility: Leads efforts in collaboration with AdventHealth Neuroscience Institute leadership to ensure research, education and outreach programs serve the catchment area for Advent Health and are highly integrated into broader research and neuroscience initiatives.
